Baseball stadium uses scent branding

When I think of the scent of a baseball stadium, what immediately comes to mind are hotdogs (or bratwurst) and beer. Beer especially is the passive scent branding tool of all of Milwaukee, where I grew up. And some might say that oranges are the passive scent branding of Florida. Well, Tropicana Field baseball stadium has made a move in favor of the oranges. This month’s World Series is seeing the launch of their new “citrus burst” signature scent. Home to the Tampa Bay Rays, Tropicana Field is the first Major League Baseball stadium to use active scent branding.

DirecTV ads give a whiff of rubber

DirecTV’s been doing an ad campaign featuring scratch-n-sniff rubber scent. The ads, promoting DirecTV’s NASCAR channel, have been distributed as standalone mailers and as 4-page inserts in various magazines, including Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine and NASCAR Scene. Reviews of the campaign are mixed. According to one blogger, it smells like the soft drink aisle of a Kroger supermarket (I don’t know whether or not he was aware that Kroger uses a scenting system from ScentAndrea) . Climate-controlled golf carts include aromatherapy

A Dubai golf club is the first in the middle east to use climate-controlled, scented golf carts. The Coolwell G2 cart allows the user to insert a fragrance cartridge containing various botanical scents to help the golfers relax and sharpen their concentration, moods likely to enhance a golf game. Bowling balls get spicy

A Utah company recently introduced their latest bowling ball, which emits the scent of orange ginger. “The Shift” isn’t the first ball with a fragrance; earlier balls from Storm Products have come in peppermint, chocolate and black cherry. The orange ginger-scented ball is supposed to convey sophistication, and is aimed at professional bowlers. It costs $239.95, plus the cost of drilling customized finger holes.
