Simpsons Smell-o-vision put on hold

Plans for a smell-o-vision version of the Simpsons movie have been cancelled due to “production issues.” ScentAndrea announced earlier this year that they’d be pairing their scent machines with the December-release DVD for trial in New Zealand. According to Auckland company Apollo Marketing, there will be scent market testing in 2008 with other movies.

Cambridge, MA Theatre presents Smell-o-Vision version of Willy Wonka
Boston-area scent lovers! Run, don’t walk to the Brattle Theatre this Thursday Dec. 13, where smelly movie genius Megan Dickerson is presenting a unique screening of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. There will be essential oils, oscillating fans, blowing bubbles, real live chewing gum, and even perhaps even freshly baked blueberry pies and hot, steamy roast beef — all there to enhance your sensory experience of the film.
The show is at 7:30. Advance tickets are sold out, but a limited number of tickets will be available during the hour before the show.
The Brattle Theatre is looking at making an annual event out of presenting films that seem to call out for aromatic enhancement.

Hungry? Try a scent dinner
New York Times perfume critic Chandler Burr has been touring Rosewood luxury hotels this year, teaming with their executive chefs to create “scent dinners.” Each course of the dinner is paired not just with wine, but also with scent strips to be sniffed at various points during the meal. Burr serves as curator and host of the dinners, which cost $200 each. (See a recent dinner review in the Dallas News)

Smellovision devotee looks toward film festival
U.S. artist Megan Dickerson wants to bring back the concept of Smellovision. Working with the Boston Children’s Musem and the Sense of Smell Institute, she’s been experimenting with fragrances. Dickerson has offered outdoor screenings of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory that incorporated oscillating fans and scents like banana taffy and blueberry pie. Recalling the Smellovision and Aroma-Rama of the 50’s, as well as John Waters’ Odorama of the 80’s, Dickerson plans to organize a scented film festival later this fall. Movies she hopes to show include those that “make no sense without the smells,” such as John Waters’ 1981 film Polyester and the sixties film Scent of a Mystery. Read more at The Washington Post

Well, add mobile simulator seats, fragrances, water misting, foot ticklers, foam, laser lights and air blasters, and you get what’s called “5-D” cinema, India’s latest entertainment innovation. The multi-sensory cinema had its debut recently at Orama Krazy Kingdom theme park in Mulund, a Mumbai suburb. The theatre shows 5- to 12-minute animated short films and requires a seat belt. Archaeologists recreate the smells of ancient Rome
Archaeologists on the island of Cyprus have unearthed the oldest known perfume factory in the Mediterranean. The facility, which specialized in olive oil production and related industries, dates back to the 2nd millenium, B.C. The area was abandoned after an earthquake and a massive fire around 1850 B.C., leaving a perfectly preserved facility with intact vessels and furnishings. The team of Italian scientists has recreated the scent extraction and production methods, recreated the 14 essences that were being made in the factory, and put it on exhibit in Rome. “The Perfumes of Aphrodite and the Secret of Oil” is open to the public through September 2, 2007, at Rome’s Musei Capitolini.
