NYC hosts surreal, scented environment

May 16, 2009

Sniffing at Neto's NY exhibit Giant nylon stockings filled with aromatic spices are hanging from the ceiling of NYC’s Park Avenue Armory. The scented socks are part of “Anthropodino,” a surreal, psychedelic, earthy environment created by Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto. Experience it through June 14 at the Park Avenue Armory at 67th Street; (212) 616-3930, armoryonpark.org.

    How intriguing. And bizarre.
This looks like one of those things you won’t forget and will make good party talk for the next few years. I wish I lived closer, If the whole thing was in my driving range, I’d be there asap.

When I was at Goldsmith’s art school in the early 70s, I tried to “paint pictures” in odours, but could never work out how to pump them out and then neutralise them quckly enough.

Can this be done now? Or would I have to go back to the static stations like Ernesto Neto?

I’m currently planning a big mixed-media exhibition and would like to know if there have been any advances.

    Thanks
