Chicago study looks at malodors post smoking ban

The Chicago Tribune reported on a study of the odors permeating a Chicago bar since the indoor smoking ban went into effect in January. Using a “Nasal Ranger” field olfactometer, Dr. Alan Hirsch of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation identified 46 odors. The worst offenders were odors from wood (described as musty/earthy/moldy), urine, sourness possibly from residual alcohol, and the odors of sweat and beer. The odors were quantified, as well, and apparently the bar was “twice as smelly as an animal shelter.” Hirsch recommended maximizing ventilation and use of ambient scenting.
