A recent study has shown that residents of Mexico city, one of the world’s most polluted capital cities, are sustaining damage to their sense of smell. The test, conducted by a researcher at Mexico’s National Autonomous University (UNAM), involved testing the ability to notice everyday odors (such as coffee) and foul odors (such as rotting food). Residents of a nearby unpolluted, rural environment were able to detect smells much sooner than Mexico City residents. The research team is now looking into the extent of the damage caused to the nose and eyes. A study last year revealed that children from Mexico City have unusually small lungs. Ozone levels in Mexico City exceed WHO standards about 300 days per year.
