Famous bakery expands its product line to include candles

Scented candles aren’t anything new, but I’m interested to learn that the grocery-store bakery of my midwestern childhood has come out with a line of scented candles. Yes, Entenmann’s famous baked goods are soon to be available in wax form, complete with the aromas of all-butter pound cake, raspberry danish and pumpkin pie. Sniff around for them in stores this fall. And if you’ve got a yearning before fall arrives, apparently Entenmann’s has lines of ice cream and flavored coffees on the market already.

Soap company tries to convince Asia it stinks
Soap company Unilever is trying to sell deodorants to the Asian market. According to Unilever, the Asian market has been difficult for sellers of fragrant products, because people in Asia are less concerned with what they smell like. A Unilever representative estimates that only 7 percent of Asians use deodorant. Unilever is aiming their campaign at the younger generation, seeking ways to get the kids on the body-odor eradication bandwagon. The company has had success introducing deodorant into other markets. including Russia. An ad campaign aimed at Russian women, focusing on the idea that women needed to smell nice to attract men, boosted sales from €10 million to €160 million in three years.

Philadelphia exhibit highlights olfactory art
Philadelphia’s Ester M. Klein art gallery is the temporary home to an olfactory art exhibit about scent.
“Odor Limits,” co-presented by the Monell Center and the University City’s Science Center, explores the potential of smell in aesthetic experience, using scents to delve into “pressing, contemporary themes about cultural difference, personal identity, spirituality, and the body.” Artists include Oswaldo Maciá (London), Jenny Marketou (Athens/New York), Chrysanne Stathacos (Toronto/New York), and Clara Ursitti (Glasgow).
The exhibit is free to the public, and will be at the Esther M. Klein Gallery through June 28, 2008.

Sensor technology incorporates living olfactory cells on microchips
Scientists at the Clark School of Engineering have been developing new sensor technology incorporating living olfactory cells on microchips. The cells are kept in place by means of tiny electrical fields on the chips, and their health is tracked by sensors on the chip. Because the sensors are incorporating real biological cells, they are expected to vastly improve upon current biochemical detection technology.
To give you a clue about potential applications of the technology, the research is being funded by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Defense Intelligence Agency. Other possible uses seem to be limited only by the imagination. The sensors could detect explosives, spoiled food, and any number of chemicals. A patent application is currently pending.
Many more details are available in the full press release from the University of MD: “New Cell-Based Sensors Sniff Out Danger Like Bloodhounds.”
