Wireless scenting on its way
Here’s a new one: Air Aroma is planning to introduce a wireless scenting system. They’ve dubbed it “Arologic,” a system in which scent machines will be networked wirelessly, manageable by remote access. Variables such as scent type, intensity and zone will all be controlled from one remote access point. They’re rolling it out in Q3 of 2008, at which point the wireless technology will be standard in all Air Aroma diffusers. Have a look: Air Aroma

DirecTV ads give a whiff of rubber

DirecTV’s been doing an ad campaign featuring scratch-n-sniff rubber scent. The ads, promoting DirecTV’s NASCAR channel, have been distributed as standalone mailers and as 4-page inserts in various magazines, including Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine and NASCAR Scene. Reviews of the campaign are mixed. According to one blogger, it smells like the soft drink aisle of a Kroger supermarket (I don’t know whether or not he was aware that Kroger uses a scenting system from ScentAndrea) . MediaCreativity’s editor was overwhelmed with the scent of rubber long before scratching the little box. Read more at MediaCreativity

Ambient scenting systems put to work in UK hospitals
UK ambient scenting company Signature Aromas has been placing their essential oil-based systems in hospitals to help reduce infections from airborne pathogens. The company’s Purazone system has been shown to be effective in destroying the deadly superbugs MRSA and C. diff, as well as many bacteria and fungi. The Purazone is under clinical trial at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton. According to the company, trial results will be ready before the summer. Meanwhile, you can look at the impressive kill rates they’ve got so far.
Coincidentally, this is exactly one year after an Air Sense post about the initial UK trials (see Scent machines used in war against hospital superbug).

Scent marketing in the blogosphere
Branding Strategy Insider has been promoting scent as a key branding strategy. They’re publishing a regular column by Harald Vogt of the Scent Marketing Institute. Well worth reading, and perhaps a good place for branding and marketing professionals to send clients.

Pentel adds scent to pencils
Pentel is offering a line of pencils with scented lead, using “nanobead” encapsulation technology. The nanobeads break open as you write, releasing subtle scents of green tea, rose or rosemary. Essential oils are used, and because they’re encapsulated in the lead, they maintain their aromatic quality for up to two years. The pencils, named Ain Supplio, won the Stationery of the Year Award at Tokyo’s International Stationery and Office Products Fair last year. Read more at Inventorspot

IFF downgraded by JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Jeffrey J. Zekauskas downgraded shares of International Flavors & Fragrances in a note to investors last week. Citing slower sales in its fragrance segment during the fourth quarter of 2007, as well as rising food costs, IFF’s status was changed from “Underweight” to “Neutral.” First quarter results from IFF are scheduled to be reported May 1.
